National Wildlife Refuge Week – Celebrate the Waccamaw!

My heart still skips a beat every time I see a swallow-tailed kite soaring above me. Plentiful osprey make me hold my breath as they dive in to the Waccamaw River for their dinner and nest amidst the tall cypress trees, nothing compares to the tremendous wingspan of the swallow-tailed kite and it’s striking markings and signature forked tail. The Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding area supports the highest density of nesting swallow-tailed kites in South Carolina and is the northernmost documented nest site for the species. Down to the Wire: Your Help Needed to Reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund!

There are few conservation laws on the books that have touched more people in more places than the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). Nearly every state park, city park, fishing access site, public lands trail, wildlife refuge, national recreation area, national historic trail and national forest in my home state of Montana has received LWCF funds for land acquisition or infrastructure improvements over the past 50 years. Join us! Ashley River Blue Trail Cleanup

 

What is better than a Saturday on the River! Join American Rivers, Charleston Waterkeeper, Charleston Kayak Company, and Freehouse Brewery this Saturday, September 19th and help clean up the Scenic Ashley River as a part of our 2015 Ashley River cleanup! This event will take part across multiple sites on the Ashley River and is open to the general public.
